Golf Driving Range frequently asked questions

Capacity questions

I am looking for just a teaching studio, which structure should I choose?

Either structure will suit depending on the space that you have available. However the smallest project we offer is for two driving positions and a full size teaching studio attached in either the Curl or Cloak.

What is the smallest size configuration that you do?

Our Golf driving range buildings are modular structures for a minimum of four driving positions or more.

I need to offer a driving range facility that provides in excess of 20 driving positions, which structure should I be considering?

The Cloak, with its cantilever structure has not uprights along the building front so is more suitable for larger ranges. Your site may necessitate a range with an adjoining module that allows the layout to bend for the best use of the outfield.

When my new Curl or Cloak range becomes super busy is it possible to add more building structures at a later date?

Yes, we can include an open deck to one side of the new range that has the correct sub structure and foundations to allow for future expansion of the covered buildings.

Costs & Funding

How much should I budget for a new driving range building?

This is totally dependent on the overall scope and size of the project but as a guide for business planning purposes, currently for our CURL Golf Driving Range including the steel structure, roof, full size end panels, rear wall wooden benches, fitted position dividers and Siberian Larch decking throughout, the ex works* cost excluding foundations can be downloaded here

How can I raise funds to increase my budget?

Follow us on twitter and Facebook where we post links to new funding streams we find that you can apply for.

As our structures are designed to last for generations you could fund raise on a sponsored driving position basis, for example, offer a family or local business a named position with promotional signage in return for a sponsorship payment.

What other costs do I need to allow for?

Ball dispensing, collecting and cleaning.

Outfield works such as landscaping, maintenance, lighting and possible fencing.

Civil installation elements to consider could include rainwater drainage, service supplies, running or connecting to existing above or below ground services and site access.

Detailing

Can you supply an uncovered driving range?

Yes, we can offer a bespoke design and build service so can create a bespoke range for you. We would need a clear brief including site location details, number of driving positions, project budget and time frame. In response we will provide and outline a concept proposal and high level cost plan for consideration.

How do the HB Designs Curl & Cloak driving range structures compare to other ranges?

Our structures specifically meet the European CE marking requirement BS EN 1090-1 for structural steel buildings, a very important point! And our buildings have a high residual value and therefore can be dismantled and relocated if required.

our Golf Driving Range offers these specific benefits:

· Great lines of sight and play

· Appealing playing surface

· Welcoming environment encouraging social play

· Free draining deck to prevent standing water

· Fully engineered steel frame - links course ready

· Integrated structure rainwater management

· Fast and efficient installation

· Integral bench seating and bay dividers

· Power Tee® enabling available

· Minimal management and maintenance requirement

· Low whole life cost compared to traditional build

· Opportunity to expand in future/demount for resale

· 4r compliant (Relocate Renovate Reuse Recycle)

· Designed, Manufactured & Assembled in the UK

· DiM (Durable Identifiable Moveable) for business financing

Can we add a roller shutter door to our teaching studio?

Yes, this is possible but adds considerable cost to the structure and involves regular maintenance. Please contact us for a specific cost.

Does each range building come ready to play?

We specialise in the building structure which includes full size end panels, rear wall wooden benches, fitted position dividers and Siberian Larch decking throughout. There would be an open doorway at some point in one range end for access.

The club/pro would need to add in accessory items such as mats, signage, ball dispensing equipment as required.

Including space for pop up tees is easily accommodated; we would need to know this in advance of manufacture.

What type of foundations are needed for a HB Designs Curl & Cloak driving range?

Every site is different with varying soil and wind conditions. The foundations that we recommend are engineered strips wherever possible rather than a large concrete slab, this is due to the large cost saving and the suspension of the Siberian timber deck.

For each project we have the building structural calculations; building point loadings & extent of foundation size and specification created by our qualified Structural Engineer; the details of which we provide in advance of delivery.

The structural engineering report detailing the effect on materials for both foundations and the building will need to be undertaken for your exact location and site conditions. For example a links course would need to upgrade to special fixings and finishes. We will arrange this for you too when we are undertaking a full turnkey project.

If you have on site capabilities, we can erect onto structural foundations completed by others.

In this situation there are two choices for you, either

A, using the point loadings, you arrange for your own Structural Engineer to calculate the build foundation strip specifications

or

B, we commission our own Structural Engineer to calculate the build foundation strip specifications using the site soil samples and location data you provide to us.

The final foundation specifications and calculations are then passed to the team on site who build the foundations to the required standard prior to the building being installed.

Planning

Do I need planning permission for my new driving range?

Yes, our Golf Ranges are large buildings, with a high residual value that can be dismantled and relocated if required, they are not in the wooden field shelter category and will require planning permission.

As specialists in infrastructure for cycling, sports and recreation we can provide full planning and statutory control services and have a 100% successful track record. For the provision of visuals and CAD blocks for planning applications by others, please do ask.

Which should happen first, new outfield, new lighting, new fences or new range building?

We understand that there will be many people involved in the decision making process and possibly different specialist contractors working on site too. We strongly advise having a conversation with us at the earliest opportunity to agree the location on site for the range building and agree an outline order of other works as we do not want to move heavy installation equipment over a newly completed outfield or landscaped infrastructure. Getting the building foundations and building in first is the correct practice and can save you money in the long run.

Can I put a HB Designs Curl or Cloak driving range onto my existing concrete foundation?

This is very unlikely unless you have the specific foundation specification detail and it matches the needs of your specific new structure.
